UKEC-GRADUAN Malaysian Career Fair 2014 A Success

London, 31 March 2014 – The UKEC – GRADUAN Malaysian Career Fair 2014 held on Sunday 30 March 2014 in London successfully attracted more than 4,000 Malaysian students with the participation of 40 leading Malaysian employers representing Malaysia’s various priority economic sectors. This year’s UKEC – GRADUAN career fair represents the 10th year it has been held, to connect Malaysians studying in the UK with attractive career opportunities back in Malaysia.

“The Malaysian economy continues to be strong and sustainable, with the employers present at today’s UKEC-GRADUAN Malaysian career fair, being at the frontline of transforming the economy. We sincerely hope our top Malaysian talents take up the challenge and join us in making the New Economic Model and Vision 2020 a reality”, said YB Dato’ Sri Abdul Wahid Omar during the opening ceremony for the career fair.

There was a diverse representation of the priority sectors of the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) by market leaders; Oil & Gas (Petronas,Shell,Exxonmobil); Finance (Maybank, CIMB, Citibank, OCBC, AIA) ; E&E ( Intel, Dyson, Samsung); Business Services (Accenture, Deloitte, EY, KPMG, PwC); Telecommunications (TM,Axiata,Maxis), Infrastructure (UEM, Gamuda, Sunway, Lafarge) and Healthcare (CCM, Pharmaniaga). Government investment funds were also well represented with EPF, Khazanah and KWAP participating in the career fair.

“UKEC-GRADUAN provides a win-win platform for both employers looking for top talent, and graduating students looking for rewarding employment opportunities that fit their qualifications and interests,” shared Dato’ Noorizah Abd Hamid, Managing Director of PLUS Expressways Berhad, one of many corporate leaders engaging with students at the fair.

YB Dato’ Sri Abdul Wahid Omar also engaged in a dialogue with Malaysian students attending the fair, sharing his professional experience and elaborated on the Malaysian economy and Government policies, particularly in relation to the New Economic Model. “We were inspired by Dato’ Sri Wahid’s passion and conviction in sharing his personal journey from a poor family to professional success and his current work in Government with the students,” commented Dato’ Faiz Azmi, Executive Chairman, PwC Malaysia. Having been a beneficiary of scholarship to study in the UK himself, YB Dato Sri separately spoke to JPA and MARA scholars, calling on them to contribute to back to the nation, whether in the public or private sector.

At the fair, Maybank and ICAEW collaborated to launch GMAP PLUS, a new graduate development programme, where top graduates will undergo a two year rotational training with Maybank while simultaneously pursuing ICAEW’s ACA qualification. In addition, Petronas, Shell and Exxonmobil also promoted its PRODIGY programme, an industry wide collaboration to develop and nurture Oil & Gas upstream talent through a 2 year on the job training programme.

The UKEC-GRADUAN Malaysian Career Fair 2014 featured various engagement sessions with students by senior representatives of participating employers. “Malaysia is a good country. Those of you with the privilege of an overseas educational experience, should bring back those learnings and help shape Malaysia of tomorrow,” said Bradley Mulrooney, President & CEO of Lafarge Malaysia, during a session with Malaysian students.
